October Wrapped

We hosted a warm clothing donation drive throughout the month in order to distribute them to the community as colder days are ahead. Thank you Ella Tattoo once again for collecting donations as well as donating a tattoo to a lucky raffle winner! Axelrad Run Club also ran a donation event for us! We were able to secure lots of shirts, hoodies, and pants. We distributed a lot of our donations and were met with lots of happy faces. Thank you to everyone that donated to the cause. We look forward to going into November with full bellies and warm bodies.

Food insecurity is spooky. Houston Food Not Bombs served 2000+ meals in the month of October. On October 30th, we hosted our first distribution event on top of our spooky food share. Our menu included TVP with rice, Halloween pasta salad, vegan stew, plant based sausage and lentil stew, roasted bell pepper with cauliflower, and lots of candy.

Summer Wrapped

It has been a long hot summer in Houston! During the summer months we see an increase in need for meals and cold water. Four days a week our volunteers share vegan meals with our food insecure neighbors. We believe in mutual aid rooted in actual ongoing relationships with our community. From the month of June to September our group served 12,994 meals. In the month of July we had the pleasure of hosting a July 4th themed meal share with vegan hot dogs and burgers. Because of the amazing work of our volunteers we served 190 meals and had 30 volunteers attend!

As any Texan knows the summer months can be excruciatingly hot. On August 22, 2026 the temperature reached a high of 103F. Food Not Bombs Houston saw this need and took action. Our community answered the call and because of the donations we received, we served 2,500 gallons of cold water not including bottled water we distributed with our meals. We ended our summer cold water program at the end of September. We want to send a special thank you to everyone who donated water, showed up early, brought frozen water, and served thousands of cold drinks. We take care of each other!

Our group was able to partner with so many amazing businesses and other mutual aid groups this summer. In the month of June we hosted a hygiene drive to build hygiene kits for our community. We want to thank Ella Tattoo, Cool Dog, and East End Barber for accepting donations! We assembled and distributed 600+ hygiene kits. In the month of July we hosted a food share at the Houston Arms Embargo 1 Year Anniversary picnic. We appreciate the Houston Arms Embargo for the opportunity to share food and to highlight the work that they are doing for our community. Finally, a big thank you to the Axelrad Run Club for letting us stop by and share our message with your group! They came together and donated vegan and vegetarian pantry staples to the cause.

There is still so much work to do, join us as we prepare for cold weather. If you are interested in volunteering with Food Not Bombs Houston please join us at our food shares on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Our volunteers meet at 7:00pm at 500 McKinney Street in Houston. We are an active protest against government spending on bombs and war. Follow us on social media and here on our website.

A brief history…

A lot has happened since our last update here. We’ve been to court, municipal and federal. We’ve won locally, and we’ve obtained a federal injunction. Here is a brief history of what has happened, and where we are now.

April 4, 2012

Houston passes an ordinance to criminalize sharing food with “people in need”. Food Not Bombs Houston does not comply. Over 34,000 people sign a petition against the ordinance. Ultimately, it isn’t enforced against Food Not Bombs Houston. Texas Observer

February 14, 2024

Food Not Bombs Houston is granted a preliminary injunction. This means that the city can no longer continue ticketing volunteers engaged in protest for the duration of our legal proceedings. Houston Public Media

The bench trial is still pending. We still have an injunction. We still continue to protest adjacent to city hall at the library 4 evenings per week – rain, wind, snow?, sun, whatever.

We do not know when the ruling will come, but once we have any news, we will keep everyone posted.
