Houston Food Not Bombs volunteers ticketed for feeding hungry people in public

Houston Food Not Bombs under attack by Houston Mayor Turner and the Houston Police Department for a Charitable Feeding Ordinance issued 10 years ago that has never been enforced until now. The HPD is on record as now threatening to arrest volunteers if they do not move to the new location. The offered location is not safe for houseless people. Quote from the first person who was ticketed for serving food in downtown Houston on 03/01/2023

In the decade since the city passed this unjust ordinance [Charitable Feeding Ordinance], they’ve never demonstrated any reason or benefit for having it. My understanding of the law tells me this ordinance is unlawful. My personal beliefs tell me it is immoral and unjust.

In our economy, the poorest and most vulnerable are the most victimized by housing insecurity, toxic pollution, taxation, incarceration, food and flood insecurity. The powerful interests that write our laws and control their enforcement aren’t capable of overseeing a just recovery effort; oversight should be in the hands of the communities most affected. Food Not Bombs calls for a people-over-profit response and a caring, sustainable future for all Houstonians. We reject any attempts to use this climate-change and over-development fueled disaster to push through anti-homeless policies.
